# What is privacy?

Here's what people get wrong about privacy onchain.

They frame it as a choice between two things: transparency or secrecy. Compliance or freedom. If you want privacy, you must have something to hide.

But think about what you do every night before you go to sleep.

You close your curtains. Not because you're doing something wrong. Not because you're afraid of the law. Because it's your home. What happens inside belongs to you — and that boundary exists not to protect guilt, but to protect normalcy. Privacy isn't the exception. It's the condition under which a free person lives.

Now apply that to your money.

You don't share your salary with strangers. You don't show your bank statement to the person behind you in line. You don't broadcast your investment strategy to your competitors. Not because any of it is illegal — but because financial privacy is a basic condition of living without being exposed.

Blockchain didn't just remove a feature. It removed something that had never needed to be a feature in the first place — because it had always been the default.

That's the real paradox. The most sovereign form of money ever built is also the most transparent. And no one is talking about what that actually means in practice: that right now, anyone can look up your wallet, trace every position you've ever held, and know exactly where your money is.

That's not freedom. That's a glass house.
